Hyundai is one of the most trusted brands in the Indian automotive sector that knows just how to cater to the Indian buyer time and time again. In a market where brand value is held in the highest regard while purchasing a vehicle, it means a lot to be the second most trusted brand after the mighty Maruti Suzuki. Starting from the Santro that was launched in the latter half of 1998, Hyundai has had an amazing run so far with an extensive line-up that caters to many different segments. At present, Hyundai cars in India include hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, and even electric cars.

Almost all Hyundai cars provide an excellent value for every rupee you spend. Whether it is fun to drive hatchbacks or feature-packed SUVs, Hyundai cars deliver a unique experience that many rivals have not been able to emulate. Here, we take a look at the best Hyundai cars in India, considering the love and affection they have received from Indian buyers.

Hyundai Creta

Spinny Assured Hyundai Creta

There is little denying the fact that the Creta is one of the most popular midsize SUVs in the Indian market at present. This is a car that ticks many of the boxes when you want to buy the perfect family car. It looks good, has premium interiors, has decent ground clearance of 190 mm, and has features like airbags, ABS with EBD, parking assist, and rear AC vents as standard. From the time of its launch in 2015, the Hyundai Creta has received various upgrades with time which is why it has always stayed Hyundai’s bestseller for a while now.

Best Hyundai Creta Variant to Buy

While there are a number of engine and transmission options to choose from, the Creta SX variant offers the best value in terms of comfort features, mileage, and safety features. The SX variant only loses out on a better sound system, diamond cut alloy wheels, and the more exciting turbo petrol engine. For someone looking to own the best-selling midsize SUV in India, the Hyundai Creta SX checks all the required boxes with ease.

Hyundai Creta Specifications and Key Features:

Hyundai Venue

Hyundai Venue

This is Hyundai’s answer to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Tata Nexon – two of the biggest players in the highly competitive compact SUV segment in India. According to the sales figures of December 2022, the Hyundai Venue is the third best selling compact SUV in India trailing behind the Brezza by just a few hundred units. Considered by many as a smaller version of the Creta, the Hyundai Venue has made its space in a very competitive segment. There is also the Venue N Line version that offers tuned suspension for a more responsive handling as well as an enjoyable exhaust note from the N-line exhausts.

Best Hyundai Venue Variant to Buy

There are over 20 variants to choose from if you talk about the Hyundai Venue and the N Line trims. However, the best variant to buy is the Venue SX variant that is available with petrol and diesel engine options. If it is adrenaline you prefer over other things while driving, there is the Venue N-Line which has been tuned to provide more excitement every time you get behind the wheel. Here the Venue N Line N8 trim is the car to get, with four extra airbags, a dashcam with dual camera,, among some more added features.

Hyundai Venue Specifications and Key Features:

  • Transmission: 5-speed manual/6-speed manual/6-speed iMT/7-speed DCT

  • Seating capacity: 5

Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

The most humble and affordable car in Hyundai’s stable is the Grand i10 NIOS. Launched in 2019 as the upgrade to the previous Grand i10, the Grand i10 NIOS has enjoyed its fair share of success. In a segment populated by the likes of the dominant Swift and the Tiago, the Grand i10 NIOS has remained a popular feature-rich option. Its popularity is reinforced by the fact that it is the third best-selling Hyundai car in terms of sales. Available with a variety of drivetrain options, the Grand i10 NIOS is aimed at luring the price sensitive segment of Indian buyers.

Best Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Variant to Buy

The best variant of the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS is the Sportz variant as it has stability control, side airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, and rear camera from a long list that makes it the perfect value for money. There is only a single 1.2-litre petrol engine offered with a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT gearbox. For additional running cost savings, the Grand i10 NIOS CNG can help you save more money with each kilometre travelled.

Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 1.2-litre petrol/1.2-litre petrol + CNG/1-litre turbo petrol
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual/5-speed AMT
  • Mileage: 21 kmpl (1.2-litre petrol)/NA (CNG)
  • Airbags: 4 airbags standard, up to 6 airbags
  • Fuel type: Petrol/CNG
  • Seating capacity: 5

Hyundai i20

Spinny Assured Hyundai i20
Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 is one of the most popular premium hatchbacks currently on offer in India. The i20 is in its third generation and looks extremely sporty from the front. The premium hatchback also provides more than enough options to have as much as you want from this premium hatchback. The presence of a DCT transmission paired with a turbo petrol engine backs up the sporty aesthetic and the N-line version takes things further with its focus on being an enthusiast’s darling. The Hyundai i20 provides you with a package that has been curated keeping in mind the perfect mix of performance, style, and comfort.

Hyundai i20 Best Variant to Buy

In different permutations and combinations, there are 18 trims of the Hyundai i20 available in the Indian market currently. Then there are six trims of the i20 N Line to add to the confusion.  From this exhaustive list of options, we would recommend opting for the Sportz trim of the Hyundai i20 as it offers much better value for money than the Magna and isn’t lagging behind the fully loaded Asta version. Also, the options to choose from in the Sportz trim are many including the engines and the transmissions.

Hyundai i20 Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 1.2-litre petrol/1-litre turbo petrol/1.5-litre diesel
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual/6-speed manual/5-speed iMT/7-speed DCT/IVT
  • Mileage: 20 kmpl (1.2-litre petrol)/20.2kmpl (1-litre turbo petrol)/25.2kmpl (1.5-litre diesel)
  • Airbags: 2 airbags standard (Up to 6 airbags)
  • Fuel type: Petrol/Diesel
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: Hatchback

Hyundai Aura

2023 Hyundai Aura facelift

The Hyundai Aura is the fifth best-selling car from Hyundai in India. After its launch in 2020, the Hyundai Xcent was slowly phased out as the Aura was, unofficially, an updated version of the Xcent. In a segment that is ruled by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the Aura outsells the mighty Honda Amaze on many occasions in a year. Being newer to the market, the Aura looks refreshingly new compared to the Dzire and Amaze. Sharing a lot of features with the Grand i10 NIOS, the Aura looks more modern and updated than the competition.

Hyundai Aura Best Variant to Buy

The best variant to buy from the current offering is the Aura SX (+) as it lets you choose between the 1.2-litre petrol engine and the 1-litre turbo petrol mill. Apart from a few features like cruise control, it has everything the top-end SX (O) has to offer.

Hyundai Aura Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 1.2-litre petrol/1.2-litre petrol + CNG
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual/5-speed AMT
  • Mileage: 20.5 kmpl (1.2-litre petrol)/ 28 km/kg (CNG)
  • Airbags: 4 airbags standard, up to 6 airbags
  • Fuel type: Petrol/CNG/Diesel
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: Sedan

Hyundai Alcazar

Spinny Assured Hyundai Alcazar
Hyundai Alcazar

One of the ‘bigger’ SUVs from Hyundai, the Alcazar is a three-row premium SUV that competes against some of the biggest names in the segment like the Mahindra XUV 700, the Tata Safari, and the MG Gloster. The Hyundai Alcazar offers utility very few cars can boast of. From luxurious interiors to immense road presence to extremely comfortable seating with its captain seats to two engine options to choose from. The Alcazar ticks all the right boxes in a very impressive manner. In a segment that has recently caught up with the fancy of the Indian buyers, the Alcazar has gained momentum in terms of sales in recent months.

Best Hyundai Alcazar Variant to Buy

This will be easy to decide. Out of the six variants the Alcazar offers in the Indian segment, you can opt for captain seats in the second row in four variants including the entry level Prestige Executive variant. There are just two gearboxes and two engines to choose from. Choosing which engine and which gearbox to opt for is a subjective choice, but the captain seats are one of the best features of the Alcazar, and this is why the Hyundai Alcazar Platinum is the variant to go for. The automatic version of the Platinum trim also comes in a six-seating layout.

Hyundai Alcazar Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 2-litre petrol/1.5-litre diesel
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual/6-speed automatic
  • Mileage: 14.5kmpl (Petrol MT)/14.2kmpl (Petrol AT)/20.4kmpl (Diesel MT)/18.1kmpl (Diesel AT)
  • Airbags: 2 airbags standard (Up to 6 airbags)
  • Fuel type: Petrol/Diesel
  • Seating capacity: 6/7
  • Body Type: SUV

Hyundai Verna

Spinny Assured Hyundai Verna

This car has been in the Indian market for over 16 years, and it’s still going strong. That says a lot for a car that has withstood the test of time and the ever-changing priorities of the Indian buyer. With a major revamp in the way it looked, the arrival of the ‘Fluidic’ Verna in 2011 made it look like almost nothing that was being made and sold in India. The Hyundai Verna got the last major upgrade in 2020 and despite being outdated by more modern sedans, it still has its loyal fan base. This is a sedan that can ferry five people happily on weekdays and pretend to be a racing car on the weekends with its decent power and precise handling.

Best Hyundai Verna Variant to Buy

Currently, there are three engine options to choose from when it comes to the Verna and all the three engines have similar power output figures, but the diesel mill, obviously, has more torque to offer at the tap of the pedal. Character wise, they all are different but all three are fun to drive in their own way. This is where we take a pause and go ahead with the Verna SX(O) as the best trim of the Verna available in the market currently. Apart from the 1-litre turbo petrol engine with the DCT, front parking sensors, and rear disc brakes, it has almost everything that the Verna SX(O) Turbo has.

Hyundai Verna Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 1.5-litre petrol/1-litre turbo petrol/1.5-litre diesel
  • Transmission: 6-speed manual/6-speed automatic/7-speed DCT/IVT
  • Mileage: 18 kmpl (1.5-litre petrol)/19.2 kmpl (1-litre turbo petrol)/23 kmpl (1.5-litre diesel)
  • Airbags: 2 airbags standard (Up to 6 airbags)
  • Fuel type: Petrol/Diesel
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: Sedan

Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai Tucson

This is the flagship product from Hyundai that manages to make the other Hyundai models look ‘neglected’. A low volume premium SUV since its first generation in India, the current third generation Tucson is one of the most striking SUVs in its price segment.  The Tucson is a five-seater and it is the pinnacle of technology Hyundai has to offer in a premium SUV like this.

Best Hyundai Tucson Variant to Buy

With the Tucson, Hyundai is not trying to appeal to the masses which is why there are just two engines to choose from – a 2-litre petrol engine with a six-speed automatic gearbox, and a 2-litre diesel engine clubbed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. To simplify things further, there are just two variants on offer – Platinum and Signature.  The Signature variant comes with level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) that uses radars and sensors to detect what lies ahead of the car for added layers of protection. For the best Tucson variant to buy, consider the Signature variant without the 4WD, unless you have a specific requirement for off-roading. This is the trim that is the pinnacle of everything Hyundai has to offer in terms of comfort and safety, as the Platinum variant does not have ADAS.

Hyundai Tucson Specifications and Key Features:

  • Engine: 2-litre petrol/2-litre diesel
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic/8-speed automatic
  • Mileage: 12.95 kmpl (Petrol)/15.38 kmpl (Diesel)
  • Airbags: 6 airbags standard
  • Fuel type: Petrol/Diesel
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: SUV

Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai Kona Electric

In a market that is ruled by cars running on fossil fuels, the Kona Electric was the first electric car in India from a mainstream manufacturer. At the time of its launch in 2019, the Kona Electric promised figures that seemed ‘practical’ in real-life scenarios. Hyundai calls it an electric SUV, but the Kona Electric looks more like a crossover hatchback with slightly more ground clearance than others. Hyundai claims that it has a range of over 450 kms on a full charge, and with a not-so-efficient infrastructure, it is good enough to be used on a regular basis taking you anywhere without leaving you stranded.

Best Hyundai Kona Electric Variant to Buy

Currently, Hyundai sells only one variant of the Kona Electric in the Indian market with a 39.2 kWh battery pack. The only thing you can opt for is the dual tone roof, but apart from that, there is just one variant to choose from. The synchronous motor delivers 136 PS of maximum power with 395 Nm of maximum torque, and being an electric car, the power delivery is instant. Charging an empty battery pack to 100% using a conventional AC charger takes approximately six hours and ten minutes, and a 50 kW DC charger can charge it from zero to 80% in less than one hour.

Hyundai Kona Electric Specifications and Key Features:

  • Motor: Permanent magnet synchronous motor
  • Transmission: Single-speed automatic
  • Mileage: 452 km/charge
  • Airbags: 6 airbags standard
  • Fuel type: Electric
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: SUV

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai-Ioniq_5-auto-expo-2023

This is a car that has the potential to break the stereotypes around electric cars in India. Technically, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 should not be in this list as it is not available in the Indian market as yet, but it is arriving sooner than you can expect. The fact that it is there on Hyundai India’s website means the future of Hyundai in India looks more exciting than it already is. If you want a part of the future in your garage, you can, officially, book the Ioniq 5 on Hyundai India’s website by paying an upfront amount of Rs 1 lakh. The Ioniq 5 already exists in various international markets and has stormed the EV world worldwide with not just its performance, but also its design, reliability, and practicality. With a claimed range of 631 kms per full charge, and a rear-wheel drive system, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 should change the way EVs are looked at by an average Indian buyer.

Best Hyundai Ioniq 5 Variant to Buy

According to the information available from Hyundai, there will be just one trim of the Ioniq 5 in the Indian market. Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5 at the Auto Expo 2023 at an introductory price of Rs. 44.95 lakh. This makes the Ioniq 5 almost Rs. 16 lakh cheaper than its Korean cousin – the Kia EV6. It will be powered by a 72.6 kWh battery pack which will enable the motor mounted on the rear axle to deliver mouth-watering 217 PS of peak power and 350 Nm of maximum torque. The battery pack is significantly bigger than what is found on the Kona Electric and will still charge from zero to 100% in six hours and 55 minutes using the conventional AC charger. But it can charge up to 80% from zero in 57 minutes when using the 50 kW DC charger, and in mere 18 minutes when using the 350 kW DC charger.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Specifications and Key Features:

  • Motor: Permanent magnet synchronous motor
  • Transmission: Single-speed automatic
  • Mileage: 631 km/charge
  • Airbags: 6 airbags standard
  • Fuel type: Electric
  • Seating capacity: 5
  • Body Type: SUV

Summary

Hyundai has been around in the Indian market for over 25 years now, and they have the experience very few carmakers can boast of. Unlike yesteryears, Hyundai cars are becoming more and more advanced in terms of performance, technology, and luxury bridging the gap between the cars sold in India and in international markets. Yes, the top-of-the-line models like the Tucson are nowhere close to models like Creta and Venue in terms of sales, but the fact that you can buy these technically ‘superior’ cars in India is a step in the right direction.

Hyundai has said that it will bring six all-new EVs to the Indian market in the next five years, and the launch of the Ioniq 5 will mark the beginning of this era. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Hyundai India, as it is already in a very comfortable place in terms of sales and market share. With the average Indian buyer willing to spend a little extra these days for added safety and features, Hyundai is ready with everything it has to offer to lure every possible section of the society.
