In India, a challan is an official document issued to a motor vehicle driver who violates the traffic rules and regulations. Issuance of a challan in Mumbai in your name means you are liable to pay the penalty, depending on the type of offense you made as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019. The conventional way of issuing a challan includes the Mumbai traffic police penning down the offense and penalty along with other required details on challan form and handing it over to the violator.

While the conventional procedure of issuing challan is still in force in Mumbai, the digital age has introduced the e-Challan system. An e-Challan is a computer-generated challan used by the Mumbai Traffic Police and is being issued to all the traffic defaulters in the city. For e-Challan you have the options to pay either via cash or online payment methods. The e-Challan system also allows the traffic police to automatically issue e-challans to traffic violators caught on speed cameras in real-time.
