The Tata Nexon has dominated the compact SUV segment in India, remaining a superhit model since launch. The Tata Nexon became the first car in India to score 5 stars in the Global NCAP safety test in 2018, largely redefining the standards of the Indian automobile market. Today, the Tata Nexon is one of the safest cars in India and with over 4 lakh units sold already, the Indian compact SUV is a great value-for-money proposition in both the new and used car market. If you are planning to sell your Tata Nexon, these are steps you should follow to get the best resale value.

Factors Affecting Tata Nexon Resale Value

Just like any other car, several factors largely influence the resale value of a Tata Nexon, let’s go through them one by one.

Condition

Whether it’s Tata Nexon or any other car, the overall condition is the first thing a buyer checks while examining a used car. Since the Nexon is popular for its eye-catching appearance, it’s important for it to remain free of any dents, scratches, or other blemishes. These things also indicate that the vehicle might have met with accidents in the past, which can be a deal-breaker in most cases. Make sure, your Tata Nexon is clean inside out and all the electronic components are working properly before showing it to any buyer.

Odometer Reading

The odometer reading of a used Tata Nexon is one of the most important details and a buyer usually asks for it before even seeing the car. The odometer displays how much a vehicle has been driven. This means the higher the reading, the lower the resale value. Speaking of the odometer reading, make sure you do not indulge in odometer tampering; it is a decoy and will ruin the resale value of your Tata Nexon forever.

Number of owners

Just like age, the number of ownership changes affects the value of a car. While Tata cars are acclaimed for their durability, your Tata Nexon loses its value concerning ownership changes just like any other car. The more the ownership changes, the lesser value the vehicle commands. Usually, the first and second owners of a Nexon get a higher resale value as compared to the later owners.

Model popularity

The Tata Nexon was launched for the first time in September 2017, and received a 5-star G-NCAP rating in December 2018. However, both types of models don’t differ much from each other, as in 2018 Tata made only one alteration in which they made the seat-belt reminder for both driver and front passenger standard across all variants. In 2020, the Tata Nexon received a facelift which gave it some cosmetic tweaks and some more features like a digital instrument cluster and Tata iRA-connected car tech, however, the engines remained the same. The facelifted Tata Nexon fetches considerably more resale value as compared to the pre-facelift model.

Age

Even if the condition of your Tata Nexon is excellent, its age has a great role to play in the resale value it claims. The older the car, the lesser the resale value. For example, a Tata Nexon XZA plus of 2019 year model claims around Rs 8.30 lakh, while the same variant of 2021 year model gets around Rs 10.50 lakh.

Accidental Status

While the Tata Nexon is a robust car, its accidental history influences its resale value. While minor accidents do not have much effect, cars repaired after major accidents ask for around 20 – 40% lower resale value than that of their non-accidental condition. Moreover, cars with major accidents in their history are harder to sell, and usually get sold at throw-away prices.

Powertrains, Transmission, and features

The Tata Nexon comes equipped with a 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine and a 1.5-litre turbocharged Revotorq diesel engine. Both engines transmit power through either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed AMT (automatic). In Delhi, the scrappage for diesel cars is 10 years and 15 years for petrol cars. Therefore, in such regions, the resale value of a diesel-powered Tata Nexon would be lesser than that of the petrol model of the same car. All the same, do remember the diesel-powered Tata Nexon delivers better mileage than the petrol-powered model and this proves to be an advantageous factor to ask for good resale value for a diesel-powered Tata Nexon when selling outside the NCR region. Moreover, since cars with automatic transmissions are higher priced as compared to cars with manual transmissions, an automatic Tata Nexon commands a higher resale value than a manual Tata Nexon.

Another key attribute of a premium compact SUV is its features, as is the case with the Tata Nexon. Premium features like automatic climate control, sunroof, Harman sound system, and cruise control have always been part of the Nexon’s feature package. In 2020 the Indian compact SUV received a facelift adding a digital instrument cluster and Tata iRA-connected car tech to its feature list. In 2022, Tata equipped Nexon with ventilated front seats, an air purifier, and auto-dimming mirrors. The more feature-laden the model is, the more resale value it fetches, especially cars with features like ventilated seats and sunroof that greatly add to a car’s resale value.

Expected Resale Value of Tata Nexon

While the overall resale value of your Tata Nexon is determined by the aforementioned factors, here is the list of the expected resale value of Tata Nexon according to its model year. Do note that the prices mentioned here are variable following the vehicle’s overall condition.

Diesel

Best Time to sell your Tata Nexon

A car loses 10% of its value right after being driven out of the showroom and another 10% on completion of the first year. Thereafter, with 10% cost depreciation with each passing year, after 5 years the car is generally worth half of the original price paid for it. So, it’s best to sell your Tata Nexon within 5 years of its purchase.

FAQs

Why does Tata Nexon have a good resale value?

The Tata Nexon is one of the most successful cars ever sold in India and is reigning in the compact SUV segment for quite a while. When a car reaches such stardom, most people just want to get their hands on it whether it’s new or used, making the resale value of the car considerably higher than that of the rest.

Among the Tata Nexon’s diesel engine and petrol engine, which one has a better resale value?

While the set of turbocharged engines has played a great role in Nexon’s success, owners have reported that the 1.5-litre turbocharged Revotorq diesel engine is considerably more refined and thereby more durable than the 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine. This is primarily because the diesel engine uses four cylinders while the petrol engine is a three-cylinder unit.

What factors affect the resale value of a Tata Nexon?

Just like any other car, the factors affecting the Tata Nexon’s resale value are its overall condition, odometer reading, age, model popularity, powertrain, and features.
