How the Tigor EV can drive an EV revolution in India

The leading contender of the EV race in India, Tata plans to take a huge leap ahead with the launch of the new Tata Tigor EV 2021. It seems to be a vital stepping stone of the Indian automaker’s promise of launching 10 all-electric vehicles by 2025. Equipped with the Ziptron EV technology, the new electric-powered compact sedan can bring a much-needed EV revolution to India. What revolution are we talking about and why is it much needed? Let’s dive into details right away.

India’s EV landscape today

In India, these are the electric cars that are currently on sale.

Mercedes-Benz EQC

You can clearly see, there are not many affordable options before Indians if they consider electric cars. Those who anyway go for electric cars have much to ponder, especially the charging stations which highly rely on the infrastructure of the area. There are only 1800 EV charging stations across India as of March 2021. Recently the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has established new norms for electric vehicles that stipulate no registration charges for electric vehicles including the renewals. The government’s agenda of promoting electric vehicles might substantially be supported by the arrival of the new Tata Tigor EV 2021.

Why is the Tata Tigor EV important?

Accessible price point and impressive mechanics

Tata Tigor EV is anticipated to be priced ₹ 1.5 – 2 lakhs higher than the standard ICE version Tigor which is currently priced ₹ 7.81 lakh for its top variant. Not only will the Tigor EV be the most affordable electric car, but also offer the Ziptron EV technology that debuted in India with Tata Nexon EV.

As the ex-showroom price of Tigor EV is expected to be ₹ 9.31 to 9.81 lakhs, it shall prove to be a strong competition for ICE powered cars of somewhat similar range such as Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, and Skoda Rapid to name a few.

Have a look at the expected performance figures of the Tigor EV: 75 hp power, 170 Nm peak torque, 0 to 60 km/hr in 5.7 secs, and 300+ kilometres range. Magnificent, Isn’t it? Furthermore, the 26 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack is capable of fast charging and 0 to 80% could be topped in 60 minutes.

Encourage EV adoption

For the price-sensitive masses, the timing of Tigor EV arrival couldn’t have been better. With rising fuel costs and more people becoming more sensitive towards their carbon footprint, an affordable EV could be the impetus to drive mass adoption. It will also result in the manufacturing of thousands of EV charging stations across the country and substantial development of the nation’s Infrastructure.

In order to push and expedite EV penetration in India, the Government of India  has enforced the FAME II scheme that provides EV buyers subsidies. State governments are further supporting this scheme with additional perks.

Under the FAME-II scheme, electric four wheelers will receive an incentive of Rs. 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity, up to a maximum of Rs. 1.5 lakhs. Furthermore, the Ministry of finance is providing the relaxation with a lower rate GST at 5% for EVs. And the First-time buyers can take a loan and get tax benefits of up to Rs 1.5 lakh under Section 80EEB of the Income Tax Act.

Benchmark for EV cars in India

Affordability, convenience, efficiency, and power make Tigor EV a perfect package. It becomes far more appealing with Tata’s reliability, built quality, and brand image. Although the car is not the first EV in India, still Tata Tigor EV will blaze the trail and is expected to set a benchmark for budget electric cars in India. Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, and other automakers would place their electric-powered products basing the performance of Tata Tigor EV.

There are already rumours of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota working together on introducing a WagonR based EV. If launched, this car would fall in a similar price range, if not cheaper, as the Tigor EV. Mahindra has also showcased an EV based on the KUV100 car, which has been planned to launch in 2023. Tata itself will be keen on expanding their EV portfolio in the budget segment based on the performance of the Tigor EV.

An Electrifying Future

EV being charged

Electric vehicles are fast leaving the niche segment they occupy to become more mainstream. While more premium EVs like the Audi e-Tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC highlight the best possible EV experience, the more budget-oriented cars like the Tigor EV is where the true EV revolution lies for India. There is a lot of expectation from the Tigor EV and the coming months will be exciting for new car buyers looking for a more sustainable driving experience.
