Renault has recently revealed the Renault Duster, which is to be launched in March 2026. Like every other mid-size SUV, the Renault Duster will face the strongest competition from the segment leader, the Hyundai Creta. Interestingly, the Renault Duster was the first to pioneer this segment back in 2012. Essentially, this is a comparison between the segment’s father and its reigning ruler. So, how well does the Renault Duster fare against the Hyundai Creta? Let’s find out.
Renault Duster vs Hyundai Creta: Dimensions & Design
| Renault Duster | Hyundai Creta | |
| Length | 4,343 mm | 4,330 mm |
| Width | 1,813 mm | 1,790 mm |
| Height | 1,659 mm | 1,635 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,657 mm | 2,610 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 212 mm | 190 mm |
| Boot Space | 518 litres | 433 litres |
The Renault Duster is 13 mm longer, 23 mm wider, 24 mm taller, and has a 47 mm longer wheelbase compared to the Hyundai Creta. Moreover, with a 212 mm ground clearance, the Duster rides higher and has a significantly larger boot than the Creta. While sitting back-to-back in the rear seats of both these SUVs, the measurement differences can be felt, but accommodating three adults in rears seats of both will be a slightly uncomfortable fit. So, the Renault Duster is larger than the Hyundai Creta, but the spaciousness for passengers is more or less the same in both SUVs.

As far as designs are concerned, the Renault Duster looks sportier than the Hyundai Creta. The French SUV has rather deep scoops on its bonnet that, along with the flared front wheel arches and functional air ducts, give the face an aerodynamic appeal. Although there are muscular elements too, for example, the upright bumper, boxy LED head lamp cluster, rectangular gloss black grille with ‘DUSTER’ lettering embossed on it, and large blacked-out air dam with silver housing. The side profile is also muscular with squared-off wheel arches and muscular protrusions over them, while the rear door handles mounted on the C-pillar are a unique element. At the rear, like most modern mid-size SUVs, the Duster features connected tail lamps.

The Creta’s face is what makes it stand apart the most from the Duster. It looks more aggressive, especially due to the large parametric grille with chrome treatment. Lower down, the blacked-out air dam is made to look like an extension of the grille. Unlike the Duster, the Creta features a split headlamp assembly, with L-shaped LED DRLs connected by a light bar placed on the top of the grille, while the main quad LED headlamps are placed lower down on the bumper. Compared to the Duster, the Creta gets a much flatter bonnet. Over to the side, the wheel archers are rounder than the ones on the Duster, and the rear door handles are conventionally integrated onto the rear door panels. While the Creta also features connected tail lamps, its tail lamps are boxy, instead of arrow-shaped ones, which are on the Duster.
The Renault Duster is slightly larger and looks sportier than the Hyundai Creta.
Renault Duster vs Hyundai Creta: Engine & Transmission
| Renault Duster | Hyundai Creta | |
| Engine | 1-litre litre turbo petrol engine 1.3 litre turbo petrol engine 1.8-litre strong hybrid engine | 1.5 litre NA petrol engine 1.5 litre turbo diesel engine 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine |
| Power | 100 PS (1-litre turbo) 163 PS (1.3-litre turbo) 160 PS (strong hybrid) | 115 PS (NA petrol) 116 PS (diesel) 160 PS (turbo petrol) |
| Torque | 160 Nm (1-litre turbo) 280 Nm (1.-litre turbo) 172 Nm (strong hybrid) | 144 Nm (NA petrol) 250 Nm (diesel) 253 Nm (turbo petrol) |
| Transmission | 6-speed manual with 1-litre turbo and 1.3-litre turbo engines 6-speed DCT automatic with 1.3-litre turbo engine DHT with a strong hybrid engine | 6-speed manual and CVT automatic (NA petrol engine) 7-speed DCT (turbo petrol engine) 6-speed manual & 6-speed torque converter automatic (turbo diesel engine) |
| Mileage | Up to 18.4 km/l (petrol) Up to 21.8 km/l (diesel) |
The entry-level 1-litre turbo engine of the Renault Duster is the same one which also powers the Renault Kiger compact SUV. Compared with the Creta’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the Duster’s 1-litre turbo petrol engine is slightly weaker. It also misses an automatic transmission, while the Creta’s 1.5-litre NA petrol engine is available with a CVT automatic. In this case, the Creta has a significant advantage over the Duster.
Meanwhile, the Duster’s 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine is more powerful than the Creta’s 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. In fact, it is the most powerful engine in the segment. Interestingly, this state-of-the-art 1.3-litre turbo engine also powers the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes-Benz A-Class Limousine. Moreover, the Creta’s turbo petrol engine can deliver 253 Nm peak torque at around 3,500 rpm, whereas the Duster’s 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine delivers peak 280 Nm torque at around 2,500 rpm. This strong mid-range makes this engine peppier than the Creta’s turbo petrol engine. Another advantage of this engine is the availability of the manual transmission, while the Creta’s 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine misses a manual transmission. So, the Duster’s 1.3-litre turbo engine definitely has a big edge over the Creta’s 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.
The Duster’s strong-hybrid powertrain, which will go on sale around Diwali this year, is the best hybrid powertrain in the segment. More importantly, the Creta has no answer to this powertrain, just like the new Duster, which, missing the diesel engine, has no competitive edge over the Creta’s famous 1.5-litre diesel engine.
The greatest edge of the Duster, not only over the Creta but all other cars, will be its ride and handling balance, which made it a superstar in the first place. The Duster is an entertaining machine with excellent driving dynamics that come from the precise tuning of suspension and steering. It absorbs all the jerks from the surface underneath with ease and is one of the best in the segment when it comes to smoothening the rides on bad roads.
In addition to offering the segment’s most powerful engine, the Renault Duster delivers excellent ride comfort and driving pleasure.

The interiors of both these SUVs are quite expressive of their characters. The Renault Duster is more of a driver-centric car, as suggested by the design elements around its driver’s seat. The squarish steering wheel is chunky, the touchscreen infotainment and centre console are slightly angled towards the driver’s seat, offering easy accessibility to the driver, as do the physical buttons- some stacked on the steering wheel and others below the central AC vents.

In comparison, the Hyundai Creta feels more premium on the inside, especially due to the quality of materials used. The neat dashboard houses a connected-screens setup for the touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Like the Duster, the Creta offers physical buttons for HVAC and media controls. The dual-tone grey interior theme is lighter than the all-black interior theme of the Duster, and this makes the Creta feel airier on the inside.
As far as the features go, both Duster and Creta are well-equipped. Both offer premium features like powered and ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charger, electronic parking brake, panoramic sunroof, and more. For the most part, there is nothing that Creta offers that the Duster does not.

Renault Duster vs Hyundai Creta: Which one should you buy
Without a shadow of doubt, the new Renault Duster has everything it takes to become the best-selling SUV. It is slightly more spacious than the segment-leader, Hyundai Creta. It offers nearly as many features. It delivers the segment’s best ride comfort and the segment’s most powerful engine. It looks good, and there are plenty of other qualities that make the Duster a better offering than many other cars in its segment. Another key point to note is that Renault is offering a class-best 7-year/ 1,50,000km standard warranty on the Duster. Overall, in more than one way, the Renault Duster is a better car than the Hyundai Creta.
All the same, the Hyundai Creta is the segment-leader for some solid reasons. It offers a fine balance between comfort, convenience, and upmarket features. All the same, that is not why most Indians buy a Creta. In general, most buy Creta because it offers a family-friendly, feature-rich SUV, which is dependable, drives refined, has reasonable maintenance costs, and its brand offers fantastic after-sales support, and parts availability is never a problem. The cherry on the cake is high resale value. All these factors make the Creta a more valuable car than most others in the segment, let alone the Renault Duster.
